Judge Citation: The return of the Heritage Trams represented an important moment in the recovery of the central city. Prior to the 2011 earthquakes the trams were a part of the sights and sounds of our central city and were used extensively by locals and tourists alike. Even with its current abbreviated route, the trams provide an important tourist link between the Botanic Gardens, Canterbury Museum, Cathedral Square and the earthquake repaired New Regent St shops. The guided tours provide passengers with useful commentary on earthquake stories and the cities rebuild. These tours also contribute to the preservation of Christchurch’s heritage transport. They are a welcome return to the central city.
