Awaroa/Godley Head Coastal Defence Site

Entrant: Department of Conservation

The Godley Head Battery historic area has over 110 structures and sites associated with the World War II coastal defence operation on Godley Head Reserve which were significantly damaged in the 2010-2011 Canterbury Earthquakes. The Department of Conservation has undertaken a significant programme of repairs and used this opportunity to develop a programme of interpretation and improve the visitor experience to this extremely popular heritage destination. After repairing and strengthening the gun emplacements Christchurch street artist Wongi Wilson was commissioned to give the walls life with murals of World War II. Integrated with popular walkways this comprehensive restoration of a unique heritage area has bought people back, enlivened memory and developed a vibrant and memorable heritage destination.
