Heritage Retention Award

Trinity Congregational Church

Entrant: Trinity Limited

Through a sophisticated combination of traditional repair techniques and cutting edge earthquake engineering technology the form and architectural integrity of Benjamin Mountfort’s Holy Trinity Church has been retained. Recognising that the cultural heritage values of this, one of the city’s oldest remaining churches, goes beyond the stones and mortar, this project retains the visual appearance of Mountfort’s gothic revival masterpiece. The Judges’ unanimously agreed that this was an outstanding example of heritage retention in the face of significant earthquake damage and post-quake threats. The Trinity Congregational Church will continue to be an icon of Christchurch’s legacy of nineteenth century gothic architecture.
