Poplar Lanes

Entrant: Christchurch City Council

The Poplar Lane redevelopment demonstrates how the visionary collaboration between owner, developer, architect, engineer and Christchurch City Council can breathe new life into redundant back street character and heritage buildings. This project is the culmination of over 10 year’s work that started with an architectural conservation study of the area in 1997. The adoption of the Lanes Plan in 2007 and the preparation of NZ Planning Institute and NZ Institute of Landscape Architects award winning Design Guidelines in 2008 have reinforced the Council’s significant role in revitalising the city’s laneways. The establishment of exciting new uses in Poplar Lanes has bought a diverse clientele to this former industrial area which benefits the wider CBD.
