Christ’s College – Harper and Julius Houses

Entrant: Christ’s College Board of Governors

Judge Citation: The restoration of Harper and Julius Houses represents the final stage of the post-earthquake, repair, restoration and strengthening of one of Christchurch’s longest standing and most influential educational institutions.  Each stage of the restoration of Christ’s College has been undertaken to the highest heritage standards with the workmanship being second to none, and the Harper and Julius Houses project is no exception.  While the Christ’s College Board of Governors can draw on more expertise and greater resources than many, they have led by example recognising the value that their gothic-revival architecture is to both the culture of the school and the heritage of Christchurch and Canterbury.  This project demonstrates the excellence that can be achieved through the bringing together of thorough documentary research, high quality engineering advice and architectural design, best builders and craftspeople, and an institutional understanding of the value of heritage.
