Lost Christchurch – In Memoriam

This film was commissioned to accompany the 2012 Canterbury Heritage Awards. Time may erase images of the full extent of the destruction of Christchurch city in people’s minds – and it will be easy to forget landmarks and think ‘I can’t remember what was there before!’ We need visual reminders of our past culture. This film will feature twenty one buildings that have gone forever . It will remind us of their pre-earthquake architectural heritage, then the damage the earthquake caused and finally it will focus on the empty space that now exists. It is that empty space that the Heritage Awards Charitable Trust will be monitoring and it is that empty space that will feature in a future update when new buildings are erected on those empty sites. Will they be heritage of the future? Will they articulate motifs of their predecessors? Will they be a worthy successor, or will they be another mindless and bland building that could exist anywhere in the world. That is something to look to in the future – we affect the future by what we do with the past, how we interpret it…
